WHO IS THE HANDCRAFTER?
Jim Karl is a creator. An engineer by training, he has been building, breaking and repurposing things for as long as he can remember. As a woodworker, Jim creates each piece on a individual basis, focusing on the attributes of the wood to define the structure and design of the final piece. Techniques such as engraving, resin, and fractal burning are utilized as extensions of the basic woodworking elements. Artistically, Jim leans heavily on contrast, fincorporating strong color and image shifts.
WHY LIVE EDGE AND RAW SLAB WOODWORKING?
I have been doing woodworking on an informal basis since high school shop class! Working with rough sawn lumber has design, problem solving, and creative aspects to it that appeal to my 'engineering' mindset. I enjoy creating products that are unique, and personify the beauty of natural wood. Combining this passion, with my interest in starting a small business led to the creation of NC LIVE EDGE, LLC
WHAT I DO?
I typically create live edge and slab tables in one of three scenarios:

A completed table ready for purchase and use.

A finished table top which the client can choose a table height and leg design - within some constraints.

Commision work based on client interest and needs
